American Bully

The American Bully is a contemporary breed that emerged in the United States during the 1980s and 1990s, developed through selective crossbreeding of American Pit Bull Terriers with various Bulldog breeds.

This intentional creation combined the athleticism and confidence of terrier heritage with the stockier, more heavily muscled build characteristic of Bulldogs, whilst prioritising a gentle and people-focused temperament.

About the American Bully

The breed comes in several size varieties, including Pocket, Standard, Classic, and XL, with weights ranging from 31 to 120 kg and heights of 33 to 53 cm. All varieties share distinctive physical traits: a broad, blocky head, well-developed chest, and short, glossy coat. Despite their imposing appearance, American Bullies are typically friendly, affectionate, and eager to please, making them well-suited to family life with children. They are energetic dogs that benefit from regular exercise and mental stimulation, though they adapt well to various living environments. Proper socialisation from puppyhood is essential for harmonious interactions with other dogs. Prospective UK owners should familiarise themselves with relevant legislation regarding bull-type breeds and seek out responsible breeders who prioritise health, temperament, and structural integrity. With appropriate care and training, the American Bully makes a rewarding companion with a typical lifespan of 11 to 13 years.

American Bully Characteristics

The American Bully thrives with vigorous daily activity and lots of space to burn off energy and is one of the easier breeds to train. They are well known for being gentle and patient with young children, but manage alone time well enough, though they certainly prefer company. The coat isn't too demanding but does need consistent brushing and sheds at a typical rate for the breed type. This is a very clever breed that benefits from puzzle toys and training to keep their mind busy.
