Basset Griffon Vendeen

The Basset Griffon Vendeen is a small hound that originated in the Vendée region of western France, where it was bred to hunt small game through dense, thorny scrubland.

Two varieties exist: the Petit and the Grand, though the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, or PBGV, is far more common as a companion dog in the United Kingdom.

About the Basset Griffon Vendeen

This sturdy, low-set hound stands 39–44 centimetres tall and weighs 18–20 kilograms, with a distinctive rough, wire-textured coat typically white with orange, grizzle, black, or tricolour markings. Long pendant ears and an upright, well-feathered tail complete its charming appearance. Known for an infectious enthusiasm and lively temperament, the PBGV is curious, independent, and often vocal. This breed integrates well into family life and enjoys the company of both people and other dogs, making it a sociable addition to the home. However, its determination to follow interesting scents can make recall challenging without consistent training from puppyhood. The PBGV requires up to one hour of daily exercise and benefits greatly from a securely fenced garden where it can safely explore and indulge its natural scenting instincts. With a lifespan of 12–14 years, it can be a rewarding long-term companion for active families.
