Canaan Dog

The Canaan Dog is one of the world's oldest dog breeds, with roots stretching back thousands of years to the ancient Middle East.

Originally descended from semi-wild pariah dogs, the breed was valued by Bedouin peoples for guarding camps and livestock across the region.

About the Canaan Dog

The breed was later refined through selective breeding programmes in Palestine during the twentieth century, where it gained recognition for its intelligence and versatility in roles including search and rescue and guide work. A medium-sized, squarely built dog, the Canaan stands 51–61 centimetres tall and weighs 25–34 kilograms. The breed is characterised by alert, erect ears, a distinctive bushy tail, and a short, straight coat typically sandy, red-brown, or white in colour. Temperamentally, Canaan Dogs are intelligent and quick learners, yet their primitive heritage means they are naturally cautious around strangers and may react unpredictably in unfamiliar situations. Early, consistent socialisation is therefore essential. These dogs prove loyal and deeply devoted to their families, thriving with experienced, patient owners who understand their independent nature. With exercise needs of up to one hour daily and a lifespan of 12–14 years, the Canaan Dog makes a rewarding companion for the right household.

Canaan Dog Characteristics

The Canaan Dog is a high-energy breed that needs a real outlet every day and is a quick learner and a pleasure to train. They thrive in a busy family environment, but can be left alone without too much trouble if their needs are met. The coat needs occasional grooming to stay tidy and is a moderate shedder. They are sharp and quick-witted, which is a joy, but means they need keeping mentally occupied.
