About the Japanese Shiba Inu
The breed's name itself derives from the Japanese words for brushwood and dog. Nearly extinct following the Second World War, the Shiba Inu was painstakingly restored through dedicated breeding programmes that preserved the few surviving bloodlines. Today's Shiba Inu is a small but sturdy dog, standing 37 to 42 centimetres at the shoulder and weighing between 7 and 11 kilograms. Their appearance is distinctly Japanese, featuring a plush double coat in red, black and tan, or sesame, complemented by cream or white markings. Characteristically, they display erect triangular ears and a tightly curled or sickle tail that gives them an alert, dignified bearing. In temperament, the Shiba Inu is confident and independent, sometimes appearing aloof. They display a cat-like fastidiousness and spirited boldness that distinguishes them from more openly affectionate breeds. Loyal to their families yet reserved with strangers, they can prove challenging to train due to their self-possessed nature. The breed suits experienced, patient owners who appreciate their unique and characterful personality. They require up to one hour of daily exercise and shed consistently throughout the year.
