Anatolian Shepherd

The Anatolian Shepherd is an ancient livestock guardian breed with roots stretching back thousands of years to the Anatolian Plateau in Turkey.

Originally developed to protect flocks from formidable predators including wolves and bears, this breed remains a working dog at heart.

About the Anatolian Shepherd

Standing 71–81 centimetres tall and weighing 40–65 kilograms, the Anatolian is a powerfully built dog with a broad head, deep chest, and short, dense coat typically fawn-coloured with a black mask. Built for independence, the breed was designed to make decisions without human direction, a trait that shapes its character today. Naturally calm and steady, yet highly alert and territorial, the Anatolian makes an exceptional guardian. However, these instincts mean the breed requires experienced, confident ownership. Early socialisation is vital to help it distinguish between genuine threats and everyday activity. The Anatolian is deeply loyal and affectionate with its family but reserved with strangers. It needs a securely fenced property with adequate space and thrives when given clear purpose and consistent, calm leadership. This is not a breed for first-time dog owners, but for those who understand its guarding heritage and can provide the management it needs, the Anatolian Shepherd makes a devoted and reliable companion.
