Best Puppy Foods in the UK: What to Feed in the First Year

Puppies have nutritional requirements that are meaningfully different from adult dogs. They are building bone density, muscle mass, and organ development simultaneously, and the food they eat during this period has a long-term impact on their health. Getting it right matters.

What Makes Puppy Food Different

Puppy formulas contain higher levels of:

  • Protein to support rapid muscle and tissue development
  • Calcium and phosphorus for bone and teeth formation
  • DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), an omega-3 fatty acid that supports brain and eye development
  • Calories to fuel growth, play, and the energy demands of a developing body

Feeding an adult maintenance food to a puppy is not ideal because these formulas are not calibrated to support growth. Feeding an adult dog a puppy formula causes problems in the other direction — too much calcium and excess calories can cause joint problems in large breeds.

The Large Breed Exception

For large and giant breed puppies (Golden Retrievers, Labradors, German Shepherds, Great Danes), the calcium and calorie calibration is particularly important. These breeds are prone to developmental orthopaedic disease — conditions affecting bone growth — when overfed calcium and calories during the growth phase.

Large breed puppy formulas are specifically calibrated to support healthy bone density without the excess that causes problems. Using a standard puppy formula rather than a large breed puppy formula for a Labrador puppy is a real risk. Check that the food you choose specifies "large breed" if your puppy will grow beyond 25kg.

What to Look for on the Label

The same principles apply to puppy food as adult food. Named meat source as the primary ingredient. Specific rather than vague ingredient declarations. No artificial colours or preservatives. A feeding guide calibrated by age and expected adult weight.

For puppies, look for:

  • At least 25% protein (dry matter basis)
  • DHA listed in the ingredients or additives, often as fish oil
  • Calcium and phosphorus listed in the analysis section (typically 1 to 1.6% calcium for standard breeds)
  • Clearly labelled as "complete" food, meaning it meets all nutritional requirements without supplementation

How Long to Feed Puppy Food

The transition to adult food depends on breed size:

  • Small breeds (under 10kg adult weight): switch at around 9 to 12 months
  • Medium breeds (10 to 25kg): switch at around 12 months
  • Large breeds (25 to 45kg): switch at 15 to 18 months
  • Giant breeds (over 45kg): switch at 18 to 24 months

Large and giant breeds have longer growth periods, which is why they need puppy-specific formulas for longer. Switching too early can mean missing the tail end of bone development support.

Feeding Frequency

Young puppies have small stomachs and need feeding more frequently than adults:

  • 8 to 12 weeks: 4 meals per day
  • 12 weeks to 6 months: 3 meals per day
  • 6 months onwards: 2 meals per day

Use the feeding guide on the packaging as a starting point, then adjust based on your puppy's body condition. You should be able to feel their ribs with light pressure but not see them protruding.

Treats During the Puppy Phase

Treats should account for no more than 10% of your puppy's daily calorie intake. During the puppy phase, when precise nutritional balance matters, excess treats can displace the nutrition coming from the complete food. Keep treats small and infrequent, particularly during training sessions where repetition is high.
